A gas laser is where an electric current is discharged through a gas to produce coherent light which is hot enough to cut material. The gas also prevents contamination of the cut edge by blowing away any debris and preventing oxidation. Lasers make a thinner cut (kerf) than physical saws.

The gas laser was invented in 1960 and was the first continuous-light laser and the first to operate on the principle of converting electrical energy to a laser light output. Different gases are used for different purposes. Helium-Neon lasers are used to make holograms, for example.
